I paddle with my family. I can't imagine doing a run without it! There is one in my wife's boat too with some webbing and extra caribiners.

Better looking at it than lookin for it, even on the coast. If on a rocky slippy sjore, its alot easier to walk the lenght of the rope and then drag the full boat? esp when its dark.

Although not used often in a sea kayak it does not hurt to keep a shorter thin line throw bag around.
They do not take up much room and in areas where there is no shore line read sttep fjords and cliff coastlines, where a distressed paddler can get pushed into some seriously rough situations, it makes a rescue possible without having to paddle into the same wave action against the walls of the cliff.
It is not a frquently used item but it happens if you are out with inexperienced paddlers or someone who forgets that wave action and small tide surges against a rockwall are serious.
I bring one out and have used it. Similar to bringing a kayak up below a large hydraulic and throwing out a line without getting yuorself pulled into the hydraulic with the victim.

the best thing to do is just to have one at all times

in Belgium, you must have a throwbag in your boat when you are on the sea. this is at last one in the group. I haven't one by my self, but always use one of our club. always 50% of our group has one when we are on rivers.

still what if you had to make the throw because someone is caught in a hole and it turns out that you are the only one that is capable of getting him out and then you don't have one

I always carry a throwbag when boating on rivers in case I need it to help rescue a boating friend. My best friends carry throwbags so they can rescue me if necessary.

i think its stupid to paddle a river and not have one with you but that is my opinion.

if you don't have a throwbag and you need help why should the others help you if you can't help them
