i use a screw roll or a storm roll to get back up but can do a hand roll if ive lost my paddle or planted it vertically in the mud again like last summer. it took ten minutes to find it again

Instead of taking my paddle to the surface and then trying to roll i forgot everything and tried to push of a very muddy pond floor, which sucked my paddle from my hands and still left me breathing H2O.

I really need to learn to hand roll.
Always wanted to but never had someone show me where to start and correct my mistakes.

i can almost do a full handroll but i always fall back down at the last second i think that the reason i fall back over is because it is hard to use both hands in a handroll because i hand wants to be on your stomach

The secret to a hand roll is to have a really good hipflick action. as you go over lean backwards place both hads cuped to gether on the surface and force through the water pushing downwards. this causes moentum which you can add to with your hip flick to get back the right way. Staying low on the back helps to roll the boat up as well.

like everything it takes practice but to start with also try and use the momentum of the enitial roll that takes you under water plus the hand pull and the hip flick

If i am doing my hand roll i stop count to 4 then put my hand toghether lik i am claping then hipsnap while halfway through i open my hands like a keeper blocking a shot then move my hands and all the while keeping my body tight to the boat. And is hard to do when your fat is in the way! (265)

Try losing weight then. Take up biking. Running is hard on people anyway. I have only 5% bodyfat and my knees still hurt for a month after running a marathon. So I gave up long distance running :) Anyway, It will improve your boating if you lose weight because you'll have more muscle to throw down your boat. Sorry, if you didn't want any advice... especially on the obvious.

yea i two years ago i weighed 245 then in two months i cut to 200 because i was a wrestler. Now after that i didnt wrestle this year so i blew up to 265 I am on my way down trust me around summer i will be at 230

The one that gets me upright fastest and most reliably depending on where I am and how I went over.

Usually this turns out to be a mixed up Reverse-Screw / Back-Deck roll with some personal touches.
