Actually they mainly hunted seals. Ring seals, harp seals, and bearded seals. Ring are best for eating :D

sweet that is preety kewl. I was watching a show on a greenland adventure race (run 10k ski 20k paddle 10k) and they didnt make them wear life jackets. When asked by a reporter from America on why they didnt have to wear life jackets. he replied "why prolong the invetable." sorta makes you think twice before running a cold water river.

[quote:e12aeec98b="arthur"]does anyone knows his name :?:  and wasn't that a oceankayaker :!:[/quote:e12aeec98b]

I found this: www.cbca.org.br/historia.htm (in portuguese)
John MacGregor, a sottish lawyer, is reputed the first to use a kayak for sporting ends (rivers and lakes in Europe). He designed his own boat called "ROB ROY" and he wrote a book called "Un millier de miles dans le canoe Rob Roy", talking about his adventures.

Good morning (at leat it is here)
Got to agree that the inuit accross the arctic have kayaking down to a fine science.
Hunting animals from a kayak is a crazy thing to do and they are good at it and for the most part they stay alive while doing it.
My wife and I spent a lot of years working in Canada's arctic and living in the communities. That included eating with them in the camps.
For what it is worth, seal will keep you alive but no matter the type of seal, it is in my humble opinion not too tasty (cooked or uncooked).
I will stay with the fish.

As for best paddler, it will keep changing through the years.
I used to watch Corran Addison going really big years ago.
He is still amazing but now EJ hold it down in our house and still gets my vote.

Since you ask,

We spent our summers in a couple of places in the Canadian Arctic.
One year was spent in Sheperds Bay (Taloyoak) and Igloolik.
Another was spent in Resolute and a lovely little spot called Grise Fjord.
Yet another was spent on a island called prince Charles Island off of Hall Beach.
I had the luxury of spending a work season on Resolution island (just off Frobisher Bay) which is polar bear paradise....
And a last season in a place (camp) in an inlet called Dundee Byte. (if you find the magnetic north on a map you will be with 50 miles of our camp.
Sylvie, my wife, was a helicopter pilot before we had kids and I was her mechanic. We traveled throughout the north working for different customers.
Those days are over but got lots of memories.
If you van stand the water temperature there are some really spectacular places to go paddling too.

Nice. Having said that I have paddled in places where pro's have been on the shore and it feels really good to get a thumbs up from one of them even if you are takiing a crack at your first big wave or hole and got it dowmn without getting trashed.
You are mostly right though. Paddling with my friends and familly is #1 and getting their approval and support is the best feeling in the world.
But... That was not the question.
If you asked me who I enjoy paddling with more than anyone in the world and who impresses me the most every time I am on the water with him I got to say it is my son. (Hands down)
In the mean time....
DC sounds good.
Nathan: do you or for that matter any of you get up to this end of the world (Ottawa River, Lachine Rapids, Expo 67, northern new york)?
It would be really cool to paddle with some of the guys and gals on this site!
