forget the transformer. It has the performance characteristics of a cardboard box.

The kingpin is nice, but you might as well get a Disco, and you can have better river running abilities.

Forget the Booster and consider teh Turbo. The small one sucks. The 52 ist he one that works. (I was privy to two Booster prototypes and provided a good amount of feedback. Great boat at the time. It's just irrelevant now.)

But, if you're going that route, give the Fish or Pintail a try. Fish is more high performance. Pintail is a bit faster and easier to paddle.

Imagine this. Follow the demo demo demo advise. The process of tyring many many many new boats that you have never experienced before. Smiling. Feeling. Experimenting with what you'd like to really have to play with....
NOW. Picture that you are an intellegent person who is suspicious of peoples' intent. The most popular boat is the most popular boat because of marketing and salesmanship. Good advertising. Great salespeople get the boats into the stores. The stores sit on the boats for a while, make a cheap price because they bought too many, now everyone has one. You are smarter than that because you want to have the most fun that you can possibly have. More fun than the people who just bought the same old boat with new stickers. You know how to look further. Question more. Feel more, REALLY feel out the boat that will make you smile.

That is how I found my latest batch of boats.

Its slow in the surf because its so short! It just bounces around which is fine on river waves and holes but no good in the surf! Longer play boats from the cartwheel era were much better in the surf as they had slighty longer boats with flat hulls and ok rails!

If you want to learn to surf pick up a surf kayak much much better than any river rubbish but steep learning curve! Mega are producing plastic boats now around £400 or you could prob get a full carbon 2nd hand boat for around the same money!

The best playboats for surf would be the Riot Glide Slice Tekno Dom, Pyranha Inazone Prozone S8 7O, Necky Gliss , Dagger Ultrafuge Centrafuge Egos Ids

If you really want to learn to surf and have (almost) no experience kayaksurfing I'd recommend to try an older style playboat (like the ones Urge mentioned. Don't forget the Trickster/Prankster and Disco). Learn to surf first. Once you know how this works get yourself a true surfkayak, not before.

I learnt the hard way that a surf kayak is not the easiest boat for most people to learn in, even after 20+ years of kayaking and 18+ years of canoepolo. I couldn't and am even getting back to my Tekno for a short while to get the surf feeling again. Once the water has wamred up a bit and temperatures have risen I'll dust of the Marauder again ;)
